Lucasfilm makes Forbes 500
The following news from The Hollywood Reporter concerns George Lucas' production company Lucasfilm and their unexpected entry into Forbes 500 Private Companies' list. Also making the list is Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG.
DreamWorks SKG, one of the few Hollywood studios that does not belong to a larger conglomerate, and Lucasfilm, the production company of filmmaker George Lucas, have landed on this year's Forbes 500 Private Companies list, making projected financial data for both traditionally close-mouthed companies available for the first time. Forbes, the magazine publishing company founded by billionaire Malcolm Forbes, ranks the top 500 privately held U.S. companies each year, based on revenue and number of employees. For 2000, DreamWorks ranks No. 174 and Lucasfilm comes in at No. 219.
If companies do not respond to the magazine's requests for financial data, Forbes said it provides profit and revenue estimates based on guidance from industry analysts, trade organizations and competitors. For fiscal 2000, Forbes concludes that DreamWorks took in an estimated \\$118 million in profits and $1.2 billion in revenue. DreamWorks, launched in 1995 by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, does not have to make its financial figures public because it is privately owned. DreamWorks spokeswoman Vivian Mayer declined comment on the Forbes estimates. Lucasfilm had revenue of $1.05 billion in 2000, with $230 million in operating profit and $110 million in net income, Forbes said. A Lucasfilm spokeswoman did not return calls before press time.
